National Human Resource Development: Advances in HRD Scholarship and Practice

Abstract: We reviewed human resource development (HRD) literature to share updates on the advances in national human resource development (NHRD) scholarship. The four flagship journals in HRD – -- Human Resource Development Review, Human Resource Development Quarterly, Human Resource Development International, and Advances in Developing Human Resources were reviewed for this purpose. We provide a summary of key advancements in NHRD scholarship from the HRD literature. We draw from the international development literature outside HRD to identify NHRD practices as this is an under-examined area in HRD. We broadened the discussion concerning the impacts of social justice, diversity equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, and other societal challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic to recommend future opportunities for advancing NHRD scholarship.
